Taking Flight', depicts a female figure that stands in the foreground of the painting, gazing directly at the viewer. In her hand sits a Sea Eagle with is wings outstretched, caught in the midst of taking flight. The dress worn by the female protagonist is adorned with native Waratah's, signifying the Australian Bush. Her hair is stringy and wild, reminiscent of tree roots. This serves as a physical connection between her and nature, and alludes to the connection between 'femininity' and 'mother nature'.
